ScholarshipsOmaha Housing Authority Foundation ScholarshipThe Omaha Housing Authority Foundation supports the educational development of OHA residents pursuing post secondary education. PURPOSE: Through a strong belief in the importance of recognizing and fostering leadership potential and a desire to return some of the benefits gained from living in the Omaha community, the Omaha Housing Authority has established the OHA Foundation Leadership Scholarship. This scholarship award will be given to residents of the Omaha Housing Authority who demonstrate leadership potential and scholastic ability. Our hope is that this scholarship will help the recipient attain his/her academic goals, develop leadership abilities and foster social service attitudes that will positively impact our community. Submit completed application to: The Ann Goldstein Outstanding Young Leader AwardPurpose: Each year the Leadership Omaha Alumni Association awards a book scholarship to one or two graduating seniors who have lived in the Omaha Housing Authority throughout their school career. Class 10 established this scholarship, the Outstanding Young Leader Award, after their Health and Human Service seminar as a way to give back to the community. The goal each year is to raise enough money to fund one or more scholarships. In 1999 the award was renamed the Ann Goldstein Outstanding Young leader Award, as a tribute to Ann Goldstein, the former director of Leadership Omaha. Description: A non-renewable leadership award in the amount of $1500.00 will be awarded, on an annual basis, to a high school senior. The recipient of the scholarship will attend a private or post-secondary institution during the same calendar year in which the scholarship is awarded. Requirements for Eligibility:

Primary consideration for the scholarship is scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, school/community activities, recommendations, and need. All applications are due on March 1st of every year to the scholarship chairperson at the address listed below: Mr. Saluhu Issaka 2006 Leadership Omaha Scholarship RecipientsAfter weeks of waiting, they finally have the answers they were expecting. Now they can sit back, breathe and think about other things. Two Omaha high school seniors just got notified last May that they are the Leadership Omaha Scholarship winners for this year: Javon and Nga. Seventeen-year-old Javon from South High School was excited when he heard the news that he won the scholarship. Not only did he apply for the Leadership Omaha scholarship, he also applied to the CASE (Casualty Actuaries of the Southeast) and the Goodrich scholarships. Javon said he was the only student at South High School who had applied for the Leadership Omaha scholarship. The Leadership Omaha scholarship awards money to those high school seniors who have lived in the Omaha Housing Authority housing throughout their school career. Class 10 established the scholarship, The Outstanding Young Leader Award, as a way to give back to the community. Not only does Leadership Omaha look for those high school seniors, but also those who will attend a private or post-secondary institution during the same year in which the scholarship was received. Leadership Omaha applicants must also be American citizens who have lived in OHA public housing or section 8. Applicants must have presented strong community leadership skills. The ACT and SAT college entrance exams are not currently required for the Leadership Omaha scholarship. “I was so happy when [Leadership Omaha] told me about [winning] the scholarship,” Javon said. “I couldn’t stop smiling. I tried but I could not. I needed the money.” The Leadership Omaha application process consists of a personal statement, two academic transcripts, and two recommendations: one must be related to school affairs, and the other transcript must be related to community affairs. Javon will use the scholarship money for room and board, as well as fees for books and tuition for the fall 2006 semester. He is looking towards a major in business and technology, with a minor in photography, although he is not sure if he will continue with football and track. He had applied to four colleges during his application process and has decided to attend Peru State College in the fall. “I wanted to go to an out-of-state college.” Javon worked with Adrienne Danner, YMCA outreach program coordinator, for assistance with his Leadership Omaha essays. One essay that sticks in his mind is the one that he and Danner had worked on for a long time because of the word-usage and grammar. “I helped [Javon] with his essays, registering for the ACT tests and the letters of recommendations, college applications, and spoke with his high school counselors,” Danner said, “and they liked his story.” We congratulate Javon and know that he will do very well in his four years at Peru State College and make OHA very proud. Nga, the other Leadership Omaha scholarship winner, was unavailable for comment at the time of press. |
